Nicomachean Ethics

Aristotle did a good job setting the tone for this book. As human beings everyone is on a mission to be “good” so in everything we do that is what we strive to be. And to me that’s is my own personal goal. No matter what our ultimate goal in life is, we want to be the best we possible can.  This is what’s called the “highest good”. He describes good when somebody or something has been satisfied or “happy”. All human beings want to be “happy”, although there is no outright definition of being happy because we all find different things that completes our desire of happiness. “Good” has so many definitions, depending on what its purpose is and if it has completed its duty. Every object/person has different duties to fulfill so that gives them different definitions of good. If there was an “end” to “good” that we knew of, this would do us justice because we would know exactly what to endeavor. The purpose of politics to make sure us, as community can live as fair, peaceful and happy as possible and the knowledge of what should be aiming for does the community that justice. That is how we work together as a community, I couldn’t agree with Aristotle any more. He tells us that there is nothing wrong with internal perspective of happiness, I assumed that meant caring for yourself, being a little selfish but only is the individual doesn’t get out of control. We have to look back on life, was all this worth it? Thats when you look back on life and can tell if it was a happy one.

  1. Nice to see someone do something other than the Apology. Also, I thought that was an interesting definition to politics.

  2. I agree with you Aristotle did a nice job depicting what good is and how we strive for it as human beings. I also think he did a great job tying in politics to this and saying how politics works in terms of the "good" that he spoke of. He also speaks highly of politics as if is higher than all other professions I thought that was interesting. Overall it was a great read I think it was better than the Apology!

  3. Great job wading through all the different ideas of the "good" in this reading. That is quite possibly the hardest part of the reading, and you did an excellent job.
