The Social Contract

Rousseau is a very informed man with great passion for his writings. The Social Contract has a very powerful message I believed that goes unanswered still. He speaks of man and how man is naturally good in doing his duty as a father because he wants to rather than is forced to. On the other hand, a ruler sacrifices his love for the people with the pleasure of commanding his people.

Rousseau also goes on the state in the Social Contract that slavery can not be justified by any means. He says that no man has any natural authority over his fellows and that force doesn't make anything right. A man giving himself up for nothing? A man can not give up his son's liberty. So why did slavery happen? The Social Contract made me think about what Rousseau said and what the answer to his questions could be.

  1. What you talked about in your second paragraph struck me aswell when i was reading it. It made me think of why did slavery happen too. When you look at it through his words it definatly makes you think about it differently

  2. I liked what you talked about in your first paragraph. I think that man is naturally good in his duty has a father because the love for your children is unlike anyother love a person can have. I really do not think that a ruler can have that same equivalent of love for his people, therefore I think that the ruler just likes having that role for power.

  3. The slavery questions are excellent. Rousseau's writings had a huge impact on how slavery was looked at in the west.
