Hobbes- Leviathan 13-16

The reading over Hobbes dug a lot deeper into the human thought process than I ever considered going. I thought I understood the concept of self-preservation to a fair extent but the depth that Hobbes went to describing what the 19 laws of nature were really opened my mind to what humans are really capable of. Humans are capable of great things if we could put aside our differences and work together for the benefit of mankind. Unfortunately, greed will always get in the way of all people helping one another. The way he explains that we are constantly at war with each other completely makes sense. I personally will defend my possessions and rights by whatever is necessary. I never realized how quickly I can get suspicious of people and bring my guard up until reading this. It has always just been an unconscious action on my part. People will always be at war with one another, but as long as there is a higher power, there will be a form of peace keeping people in line.

  1. I agree with you on the fact that greed will get in the way of people helping others which is sad. It unfortunate how people who put trust in everyone trying to look on the good side of things always seem to be the people getting screwed over.

  2. I love hearing that passages make students retrospective. Good post.
