This Reading was very interesting I was intrigued by Aristotle's ability to use the word "good" in so many different ways but in turn it meant the same thing. I agreed with him when he said" Every art and every inquiry, and similarly every action and pursuit, is thought to aim at the some good; and for this reason the good has rightly been declared to be that at which things aim". To me this meant that we as a people try so hard with everything we do because we want it to be good and that good is what we are ultimately trying to aim for. This was Aristotle's opening sentence and it set the stage for the rest of the essay. Another thing that I thought was important was that he thought that Political Science aims for the highest of all goods. This means to me that he thought that Political Science was like that highest of all arts that are good and it had more prestige than the other arts of that time because to me all sciences are intertwined. Aristotle also referred to honesty as something we have to be, according to him "piety requires us to honour truth above our friends". This means that because of our religious fulfillment that we have to tell the truth even if it undermines our friends. I like this because in life I feel like we are giving choices and sometimes those choices might have to go against someone close because they are bringing you down and pulling you in the wrong direction with them. Aristotle also goes on to say " for it is that sake of this that we all do all that we do, and the first principle and cause of good is , we claim, something prized and divine". This means that we do things the best that we can just for the prize and praise at the end of the task and not just because it is the right thing to do. I agree with this statement because we see stuff like this all the time on T.V. people use reality competitions and with in those games theses people do knifing things to one another just so that they can get the prize money. When Aristotle talks about virtue on the last page I agree with him " Virtue too is distinguished into kinds in accordance with this difference; for we say that some of the virtues are intellectual and others moral, philosophic wisdom and understanding and practical wisdom being intellectual liberality and temperance moral". In other words, as a whole we categorize virtue and we do not understand the difference to tell which virtue a person is demonstrating. In conclusion, I like this essay because it gave me some insight as to how political science can be intertwined with certain things. This essay also made me pay attention to details more as I read so that I could understand the material better.
I love the way he told us what "good" was in so many ways. This was hard for me to understand, i had to read it a couple times to get a complete understanding of what he was trying to say.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Rachael! Part of the problem is that there are many different kinds of Greek words for "good" but only one english word. If we were reading it in ancient Greek, we'd be able to better see the nuance. But it's great that you noticed that there were problems in understanding based on this. Good job!
