Protagoras

While reading this portion of Socrates' work, I found I was very confused. Different parts of the dialogue sometimes seemed like it didn't pertain to the others. This was also very long, and very boring at that. I did really like the fact that Socrates says that wisdom is more beautiful than human looks. He says, "How could superlative wisdom not seem surpassingly beautiful?" I think this shows that Socrates was a good person and didn't like a person for their physical beauty, but showed it's what's inside that counts. I also found it interesting that Socrates and Hippocrates were against Sophists, but went to Protagoras for guidance. Protagoras said he was proud to be a sophist and asks them to hold their conversation in front of other people. I found it interesting that he says that a virtue is knowledge and evil is ignorance. This clearly shows what he stands for though I am still very confused.

  1. I couldn't agree with you more about the reading, sucking. The reading had great tips of wisdom, and ways to live, but trying to get those tips while being bored to death was quite challenging.

  2. I Agree with both of yall. It had a lot of wisdom in it but the wisdom could of been put into a single page. Im not saying I dont agree with what your quote says or anything but he was probably saying that because apparently he was one ugly dude

  3. My thoughts exactly. This could have been condensed greatly and would have saved time and boredom while at the same time learning a thing or two.

  4. They went to Protagoras because he was the expert on sophism. Not necessarily because Socrates agreed with him. Good post!
