Phaedo- The Soul

Phaedo, the Soul was an interesting read. In the dialogue at the beginning of the piece, Phaedo is telling Echecrates the story of Socrates' death and the conversation that led up to it. Phaedo tells us what Socrates thought of the soul and what he thinks happens to it once we die.

Of the four different theories they discuss, the one I liked the most was the Cyclical argument. In it they argue that the soul must continue on existing after death. It is explained that there are always two distinct opposites. For example, the opposite of asleep is awake. For if we did not have one we cannot have the other. So it is with life and death. If we did not live, how could we die? And if the physical body perishes, than the other part, the Soul, must be imperishable.

  1. I agree that the Phaedo was interesting. I also liked the cynical part because it made a lot of sense to me that the soul is completely different when it has left the body.
