Hobbes believes very strongly that men are constantly in
competition with each other for power and are never satisfied, we always want
more. Therefore we are always in a power struggle with others. I find this to
be somewhat true but it very much depends on the person. It seems as though
some men are satisfied with what they have and do not crave more than they need
but others are never fully satisfied and always want more. Hobbes seems to
categorize all men as being the same but really most people are not power
hungry and are fine having a small happy life even though that is a very hard
thing to have in this society when everything is meant to be bigger and better
and you are socially expected to keep up with it.
I agree with what you said about a power struggle. If you are happy with what you have then there is no need to compete with others. The competition aspect of Hobbes only works if both people are not willing to compete.
ReplyDeleteI also think that Hobbes categorized all men as being the same. I think that not everyone wants to compete for everything and that some people are willing to appreciate what they have.
