I liked this reading and find it a perfect time to have this reading assigned to us during breast cancer awareness month. I find it somewhat ridiculous that the circuit court overruled Judge Jenkins ruling. Also, how the supreme court wouldnt review the appeals court decision. I guess it shows the quote
"The King can do no wrong " to be valid. I found it shocking that it took 14 years for Williams mother to get cancer which is how long Howard L. Andrews says it takes for radioactive cancer to become evident. I wouldnt say that the testing of bombs necessarily caused the cancer but it sure didnt help prevent it. Interesting that the government was trying to protect the country by obtaining bombs and testing them but in this case it possibly could of hurt them.
I was always taught that the bomb testings were performed well away from any people and I always accepted this to be true. It's really interesting to find out how many people were truly effected by the radiation.
ReplyDeleteI think all of us were taught that the testing was done at a safe distance from civilization. But through reading this I can see how easy it was for everyone just to believe what the government said. It was easier to believe what the government said then to believe that our own government was harming us. I'm also not surprised that William's mother recived cancer 14 years after seeing that bomb and that that is the exact time for radioactive cancer to become known. I think the two deffintly do have a strong connection with each other.
ReplyDeleteIt's really important that our government be straightforward and honest with us- if we are in a place of danger, let us know and we can get out. In some cases, I understand why it can help to keep things under wraps, but this was just a little bit ridiculous. Things like this are what make people unable to trust the government to protect them,
DeleteThis reading really shows how our government would do anything to subdue the fear of the communists. Of course, during this time of nuclear testing, the cold war was going strong so our government didn't care what it took to create an effective nuclear arsenal. Even killing it's own citizens.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the testing may not have cause the cancer and it definitely did not help prevent it. It is instinces like those that make people unable to trust in their governments. They are supposed to be keeping the countries beat interest at heart, but they were not doing so by endangering them with radiation.
